Volunteering Mentoring

Volunteering/ Mentoring
JET is here to find for you suitable opportunities to increase your work skills including our own Coffee Shop - The Wicker Chair Coffee House & Bistro.

To wake up everyday with a joyful heart and a peaceful mind is the greatest gift I continue to receive.

Tuesday is next-level busy but the most exciting day of all! This is the time that I wake up early than usual and prepare for my volunteer work for JET. I used help deliver simple English integration classes with refugees, asylum seekers and even immigrants in Action Foundation and I am now supporting Roxani in ELSE, an ESOL for employabitly course.

I thought volunteering for JET was a piece of cake since back to my home country I taught communication and literature. Then I realized teaching the basics was never an easy job that even the smallest details like pacing of discussion and simplifying the instructions given were vital in the learners’ cognitive success. My visits made more impact to me and to my perspectives than I could ever have imagined.

Indeed, JET is more than a charitable foundation. It’s a community that helps create a positive space and outlook for everyone. It is a home where one can feel the sense of inclusion and belongingness by talking to people knowing them more than their names and developing camaraderie which is gratifying. It’s a place where one can truly find their mission by going out to simply help and be selfless.

It is where I found my joyful heart and peaceful mind.

"Being a volunteer, especially so far from home, is not always easy. But my time as a volunteer with JET has been more than a pleasure. I had support whenever I needed it and Jaya was there to make sure that I was not only doing a good job and developing my skills but that I also felt welcomed and comfortable. When my time as a volunteer was coming to an end, JET offered to advise and help me find a job. All went well and I am now actually working with them! Being an employee only meant having even more support and the same openhearted people ready to help you with everything you might need!" - Roxane Antoniadou

Hi Everyone!
My name is  Sasha. I have been volunteering at JET for 2 months. Are you also looking for a voluntary placement to make your CV look more professional and attractive? Or you just want to go out, have some fun, meet new people this way? Are you interested in helping others, teaching English, gaining new skills and experience? Or you believe you have something to offer? Then welcome to JET! This is the right place to come!

Within only 2 months I have learned lots of things that I find very useful for me in the future. For example, I was taught how to run ESOL classes, how to make them successful and effective, especially for my students. Of course, in the very beginning I was just shadowing staff, observing their work. But with time, little by little, I was given different tasks to prepare. I took part in a couple of pastoral sessions, where I could learn more about UK benefits system and some issues that can come along. I have recently started an ESOL class for beginners on Wednesdays. And furthermore, I will run the Tuesday classes on my own very soon. With a volunteer helping me, like a real professional teacher!

But I wouldn’t enjoy it that much if I didn’t have friendly people around. Luckily, I have met them at JET! I am grateful to my supervisor, my mentor Jaya, who is taking care of me all the time! I am glad to be part of the team. They are supportive, always eager to help. I like that they all come from different countries and can understand how I feel being here fairly new. At JET I am learning by working. What else could be the best way for me to get new experience and improve my professional knowledge and personal skills?
